On my Seg I Glide
Oblivious to the Stares
I must Get To Work
Honks and Stares abound
Most Have Not Seen a Segway
I wave When I Can
The wind in my face
The hum of motors below
I love my Segway
Step onto the Seg
I'm standing on the platform
Lean forward to glide

I used it for about 20 months every workday. It has some sort of hardware problem that causes "Emergency Shutdowns" during my commute rides. Last Friday it would not restart like it normally had in the past, and it left me stranded. Came to a red light at the entrance to the 202 Freeway near the Salt River Bridge. The left turn lane on the other side was in full flow, turning in front of me. In Phoenix ?!?!?!?!? No way !!!!Well, after 16 months, 2 weeks, and 6 days of riding the Segway to work every day, I *FINALLY* had a weather event which delayed my commute. I had gone through wind storms, dust storms, ice on the sidewalks, medium rain, light rain, fog, darkness, 115 degree days, etc. But about 8 minutes into my commute yesterday, with a big rainstorm visible to Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-61461394150255462692007-07-24T08:54:00.000-07:002007-08-27T10:38:55.662-07:00More Holey Tire ProblemsSlime finally failed me!! I finally had a hole too big for Slime to fill. Had to go get a "self plug kit" from AutoZone and I think the hole is "plugged" for now. Survived the first morning trip anyway.Hopefully it will hold. I want to get 18 more months out of these tires but they sure are looking thin. At $275 for a new set, I want to put that off as long as I Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-90705591048330548212007-05-30T07:53:00.000-07:002007-05-30T07:56:49.393-07:00Long Segway Rides Stimulate ThinkingI just decided recently that I do some of my best thinking during my afternoon 40 minute glides to home from work.Like many people, I have historically done most of my best thinking while in the shower; but the Segway rides have replaced that now.Yesterday I decided to start writing Segway haikus. I came up with two on the ride home, and two other haikus to Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-35314804989540674222007-05-10T08:34:00.000-07:002007-05-10T08:40:24.201-07:00Slime is Da Shizzle !!Had an issue with my tires recently. My right tire was losing air pretty noticeably quickly. In the first few months, I had to refill the tires about every two weeks. Then it became one week. Then I noticed that my right tire went down considerably faster. The right tire eventually started going down in about a day and a half. I had to take action !!First I tried that Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-2751046407264369442007-05-10T08:31:00.000-07:002007-05-10T08:34:16.633-07:00Carnival Went GREATGave about 90 Segway rides at the school carnival. Many kids came back for seconds. A couple of them were too small to ride it alone so I had to ride with them.Calf muscles were REALLY SORE the next three days from all the jogging along forward and backward while I was escorting the riders on their merry treks.Fun was had by all !!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-59612627795694525802007-05-03T10:40:00.000-07:002007-05-03T10:44:53.383-07:00Distance Adjustment and Carnival Segway RidesI had the chance to drive the company pickup truck home and back the other day, so I decided to measure the miles from home to work. Using Google Maps, I had estimated 6.0 miles. But the odo in the truck said 6.4 miles. So I got to adjust my mileage on the Segway and I'm now up to 2313.6 miles total. Cool....This Friday (tomorrow) my kid's Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-66894822598263397232007-04-20T14:27:00.000-07:002007-04-20T14:52:21.221-07:00S-P-O-O-K-YI had a really spooky, heart-rate-spiking incident yesterday morning on the way to work on the Segway.First of all, let me explain that I come to work really early, arriving by 5:30 AM. This time of year in Phoenix, the sun is not yet up, so my trip starts in total black dark and I arrive at work just at the beginning of light appearing on the horizon. I have a bike light on my Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-71964472740792476752007-04-17T10:35:00.000-07:002007-04-17T10:38:17.749-07:00About 405 Miles Per Gallon (equivalent)Just did the math on my first 2100 miles of Segging. Total electricity cost: $12.96At $2.50 per gallon of gas, getting 2100 miles for $12.96 equates to404.95 miles per gallonfor the 2100 miles I have done on my Segway so far.Pretty decent !!! :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-22227355766277786322007-04-10T10:05:00.000-07:002007-04-10T10:07:48.382-07:00New Speed Record? Maybe so.... This morning I made it from about two blocks down Broadway to Thornwood in less than 21 minutes. I caught all the lights green and really was cookin'. No way to know if this was an "official" speed record, but it was pretty darn fast !!P.S. 29 Days since my wrist injury, and it still hurts and is weak. Surely I must have cracked a bone in there somewhere.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-54347395370362037192007-03-07T10:14:00.000-08:002007-03-07T10:16:54.338-08:00Ouch. (ouch.)Sprained and/or broken and/or cracked wrists really hurt. Some of the time at least. Still mystified as to the exact sequence of events which lead to my severe crash on Monday morning. It happened so fast and was so strange that I guess I will never really know the exact cause.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-25485266355313071742007-03-05T06:39:00.001-08:002007-03-05T06:39:34.084-08:00Sidewalk Pavement Is HardMajor wipeout today on the Segster. Complete driver error. On my commute to work today, there is this one spot where a little drainage ditch right beside the road does not have a sidewalk across it. To get onto the sidewalk on the other side, you are required as a pedestrian or biker or Segger to Leave the sidewalk, go briefly onto the shoulder of the road, and then Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-28631259881544466942007-02-28T09:00:00.000-08:002007-02-28T09:05:30.055-08:00Almost got to Eat Some Pavement TodayI was cruising along, full speed, on a darkened sidewalk less than a quarter mile from my work. All of a sudden the Segway hits something and does a little bounce-turn to the left, then back right, then wobbles almost enough to toss me off as I lean back to slow it down. All that in about 1 second of real time. My heart was racing with the adrenaline of Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-74924957098285805802007-02-20T05:17:00.000-08:002007-02-20T05:30:02.409-08:00Well, Life Does Change !!!Been a few months since my last post, so I guess I should say I'm still a-kickin' and still a-Seggin'.In fact, I'm on my Segway for an hour and 20 minutes every day now.My Mom is retired, and has moved from Clyde, TX to live with my two kids and me in Phoenix. She is my "unofficial" nanny and is taking care of the kids for me during workdays. Fastest run ever. I hit all the lights and had 2 little "3 second delays" waiting for traffic to pass in other situations. Me Likey !!!! :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-1158017628998652902006-09-11T16:30:00.000-07:002006-09-11T16:35:59.123-07:00Segway is a CAR REPLACEMENT VEHICLE not a substitute for WalkingI just wanted to say that in a lot of news stories which provide "comment" sections, there seems to be a lot of people who call Segway owners "lazy" or refer to the Segway as a replacement for WALKING.That's not REALLY what the Segway is for. What the Segway should REALLY replace is the use of a VEHICLE.In my case, that's exactly whatUnknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762052.post-1155913412407309622006-08-18T08:02:00.000-07:002011-12-08T14:11:02.200-08:00New time record on Segway?
I made a GREAT speed run from Holdeman to Thornwood this morning. I hit EVERY light green or yellow, and the only pause of any type I had was to wait for a school bus driver at an intersection to see me, which was about a 5 second pause.
Best I can tell is I made it somewhere between 17:30 and 17:45. Really fast. I also hit 755 miles on the Segway this morning. That's 696 miles I did not pollute by driving my car. I am averaging about 145 miles a month on the Seg. I managed to survive the whole summer with the Phoenix heat. I'm looking forward to the Fall and Winter rides too, prepared to bundle up for the 40-55 degree weather. I had been using a lot more battery on each commute, and noticed a little softer ride, and noticed a better grip in the dirt. Once I thought about it, I realized the air was low.Put them back to 22 lbs this morning, and BOY did I notice the diff today !! Stiffer ride and less traction in the dirt. Everybody liked it. MANY people tried it. My Mom probably liked it best and picked up on it fastest (genetics, perhaps?) She had literally rode it for about a minute and she took off down the road unsupervised. Most people, I made them ride it while I escorted them in case they had a problem. That means 504 miles of between 610 MPG and 620 MPG travel. That's 504 miles for LESS than the price of a SINGLE gallon of gas. My Gosh that's incredible !!!
